We need a global war and Joe Biden is more than willing to start it.
The latest developments indicate that the US will deliver tanks to Zelensky, provided that the Germans do the same and thus finally find themselves in a situation where their arms industry is integrated into the war effort against Russia.
The Biden administration is leaning toward sending a significant number of M1 Abrams tanks to Ukraine and the announcement of those deliveries could take place this week, according to U.S. officials.
The announcement would be part of a broader diplomatic agreement with Germany, in which Berlin would agree to send fewer of its own Leopard 2 tanks and also approve the delivery of more German-made tanks from Poland and other countries. That would end a transatlantic disagreement over tanks that threatened to open cracks as the war moves towards the end of its first year.
The White House declined to comment.
The deal would end a disagreement between the US, Germans and other Europeans over the supply of tanks to Ukraine during a crucial phase of the war. Kiev is preparing a counter-offensive to try to retake Ukrainian territory and Russia is mobilizing troops for its own operations.
The change in U.S. position follows a Jan. 17 call between President Biden and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, during which Biden agreed to consider supplying Abrams tanks against the Pentagon's advice. A senior German official said the issue had been the subject of intense negotiations between Washington and Berlin for more than a week and appeared to be on the way to resolution.
